Provisional program for the 2017 YP Workshop on Social Housing

Day 1 Lecture sessions (May 24, 2017) 

SESSION 1: SOCIAL HOUSING OVERVIEW

Learning objectives for this session: To appreciate the poverty and housing situation at the national and local levels (urban context); To be familiar with the legal mandates, institutional mechanisms and stakeholders in social housing delivery; To know the standards and technical requirements for social housing design and provision

Lecture topics:

      • National and Local (Metro Manila) Housing Situationer
      • BP 220: Planning and design standards for social housing

 SESSION 2: UNDERSTANDING CLIMATE AND DISASTER RISKS

Learning objectives for this session: To comprehend the basic concepts about disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) and climate change adaptation (CCA); To recognize the implications of climate and disaster risks in planning urban settlements; To understand the vulnerabilities and shelter and settlements-related needs of the urban poor in Metro Manila

Lecture topics:

      • Key concepts in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM)
      • Implications of climate change-related risks to human settlements development
      • Vulnerabilities and adaptive capacities of the urban poor population in Metro Manila

Day 2 Lecture sessions (May 25, 2017)

SESSION 3: BUILDING SUSTAINABLE AND RESILIENT COMMUNITIES

Learning objectives for this session: To be aware of sustainable and disaster-resilient design concepts in shelter design and development with particular application in social housing projects; To learn about urban planning and design strategies and solutions that mitigate / reduce carbon emission (low carbon development); To learn about urban planning and design measures that lower the climate and disaster risks

Lecture topics: 

      • Disaster-resilient design concepts in settlements planning and development
      • Low-carbon communities
      • Creating urban resilience through retrofitting

SESSION 4: FACILITATING THE COMMUNITY CONSULTATION-WORKSHOP

Learning objectives for this session: To know some tips in effectively communicating technical knowledge to communities; To be familiar with the background and situation of the community immersion areas; To go over the module, facilitation guide, and planning tools for carrying out the fieldwork activities (community immersion)

Lecture topics: 

      • Communicating technical knowledge to communities 
      • Profiles of the community immersion areas 
      • The community workshop process and guidance to facilitators

 Day 3 Site visit (May 26, 2017)

Learning objective of this activity: To have an initial exposure to actual social housing projects and learn about a working model of community development

      • Ernest Ville
      • Bistek Ville 2

Community Immersion: overnight stay in community

 Day 4 Community consultation-workshops (May 27, 2017)
