Speaker: Maria Tanya B. Gaurano

Institute on Church and Social Issues

Ms Tanya Gaurano is a research assistant of the Institute on Church and Social Issues (ICSI). She was a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Economics major in Development Economics at the University of the Philippines, Los Baños, Laguna and is currently finishing her Master’s degree in Social Development at Ateneo de Manila University. She has written articles for The Intersectoral Communicator (INTERSECT) and presented papers such as the “Urban Poor and Housing Situation in the Philippines” and “Viable Alternative Housing Arrangements” to several people’s and non-government organizations. Before ICSI, she worked as a project assistant at the Habitat for Humanity Philippines Foundation in 2002 and later on joined World Vision Development Foundation in 2003.

Lecture: Sociological Perspective on Housing

Speaker: Mr. Eddie R. Balunso

Bicol University Sociological Department

Mr. Eddie R. Balunso is an instructor and presently the Research and Extension Coordinator of Bicol University’s Sociology Department. He finished his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Bicol University and has a strong background in social research, community organizing and development planning. Apart from being a recipient of various academic, leadership and service awards, he was also awarded a Faculty Development Program Scholarship by the Commission on Higher Education. At present, he is working on his Master of Arts degree in Applied Sociology and Anthropology at Ateneo de Manila University. He has been involved in various youth programs and projects in Bicol Region and is the country’s Youth Ambassador in the 34th Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Program (SSEAYP).

Lecture: Technical Assistance to Marginalized Communities

Speaker: Arch./EnP. Arlene Christy D. Lusterio

TAO-Pilipinas, Inc.

Ms. Arlene Christy D. Lusterio is the Executive Director of TAO-Pilipinas. She is also a licensed architect and environmental planner. She has a Master of Architecture in Human Settlements from the Department of Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of the Philippines. As an ASIAN Fellow, she recently completed a research fellowship awarded by the Asian Scholarship Foundation on river basin and coastal settlements in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. Before setting-up TAO-Pilipinas, she worked for three years as an architect-planner for Planning Resources Operations Systems, Inc. (PROS), an architectural and planning consultancy firm; prior to that, spent most her professional career in development- oriented work with Samahan para sa Angkop na Pabahay ng San Pablo Apostol (SAPSPA) working directly with the poor. Her professional interests are sustainable development and water-based human settlements.

Speaker: Mr. Eduardo P. Laguerta

PHIVOLCS

Mr.Eduardo P. Laguerta is a Senior Science Research Specialist of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) and the Resident Volcanologist at the Mayon Volcano Observatory (MVO). He has a BS Electrical Engineering degree and finished a post graduate course in Volcano Monitoring from the University of Hilo in Hawaii. He has attended a training course for volcano observers in Yogyakarta, Indonesia and a number of conferences locally and internationally. His crisis assignments were the Bulusan, Pinatubo, Mayon and Canlaon volcanoes.

Speaker: Mr. Cedric D. Daep
Seastems, Inc.

Mr. Cedric D. Daep is the Public Safety and Emergency Management Officer for the entire province of Albay. He has a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the Divine Word College of Legazpi, and a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education from the Luzonian University Foundation in Lucena City. Before supervising the province’s disaster management operations, he also worked for its planning and development office. Prior to working in the PPDO, he was involved in community organizing and coordinating the relief & rehabilitation programs of the Diocese of Legazpi after the eruption of Mayon Volcano in 1984. At present, he has been a regular resource person for different disaster preparedness and prevention activities in different parts of the country.

Speaker: Arch. Amillah S. Rodil

Ms. Amillah S. Rodil is a licensed architect and editor-in-chief of TAO Shelter, the bi-annual magazine of TAO-Pilipinas. Before working as editor-in-chief for TAO Shelter, she worked as a staff writer for the interior design and lifestyle magazine Real Living, published by Summit Media. She was also a designer and draftsman for the Office of the Campus Architect of the University of the Philippines Diliman. She recently finished her Master’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning in the University of the Philippines, and just finished her research about post-disaster shelter planning in Albay for her thesis.

Speaker: Ms. Salve Cadag

COPE Foundation

Ms. Salve Cadag is a registered Social Worker and presently a community organizer of COPE Foundation. She was a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Social Work at the Bicol University College of Arts and Sciences in Legazpi City. Apart from being the Project Coordinator of the organization’s Typhoon Durian Relief and Rehabilitation Program in 2007, she has coordinated several projects in Naga City as well as in the areas of Camarines and Sorsogon provinces. Through her community organizing skills, she had been granted a Certificate of Recognition for the implementation of the JSDF-WB-PHILSSA project and a Mayoral Recognition Award for Urban Poor Service in 2006.

UP School of Urban and Regional Planning

Prof. Ernesto M. Serote is a professor and currently the Director of Training at the School of Urban & Regional Planning of the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City (UP-SURP). He finished his MA in Urban and Regional Studies from the University of Sussex, United Kingdom, and Master in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of the Philippines, Diliman. He graduated with an AB English degree from the University of Pangasinan and was a high school English teacher before starting his planning career as a municipal development coordinator. Being in the planning profession for more than 25 years, he has been regularly consulted in matters of strengthening the national and local planning system. He offers short training courses for local planning officers and welcomes every opportunity to give lectures even to out-of-town audiences.

Speaker: Engr. Jennibelle Lyka C. Kesip

BNS-Borda Philippines

Ms. Jennibelle Lyka C. Kesip is a licensed sanitary engineer involved in designing wastewater treatment facilities including community housing projects of BNS-Borda Philippines. She graduated Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Sanitary Engineering at the Mapua Institute of Technology and has worked for a few months at the Institute’s Environmental and Sanitary Laboratory. Aside from designing treatment facilities, she also does project cost estimates and feasibility studies for entities needing technical assistance on wastewater treatment system.

Lecture: Gender Perspective and Participation in Community Development Planning

Speaker: Arch./EnP. Maria Faith Y. Varona

TAO-Pilipinas, Inc.

Ms. Faith Varona is the program coordinator of the Research and Publications Program of TAO-Pilipinas. A licensed architect and environmental planner, she has been in the alternative career path of development work for more than a decade now. Before TAO-Pilipinas, she worked for non-government organizations such as Alterplan, NGO-Coalition for Cooperatives Development, Oxfam-America, and Building Alliance for Action and Initiatives. In 2006, she received a Master in Urban Management and Development from the Institute of Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS)-Erasmus University in Rotterdam, the Netherlands through a fellowship from the Netherlands Fellowship Program of NUFFIC. She also holds a post-graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning from the School of Urban and Regional Planning in the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City where she also completed her Bachelor’s degree in Architecture. Her pet projects include the TAO Resource Center and research on alternative materials and technology.

Lecture: Disaster Resilient Building Technologies for Social Housing

Speaker: Arch. Gertrudes C. Samson

TAO-Pilipinas, Inc.

Ms. Gertrudes Samson is one of the program coordinators of the Education and Training Program of TAO-Pilipinas. She has a Master of Architecture in Human Settlements from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium, and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of the Philippines in Diliman. Before working for TAO-Pilipinas, she worked for Habitat for Humanity Philippines, a non-profit ecumenical Christian housing ministry involved in building homes for disadvantaged Filipino families. She also worked as program coordinator for the people’s organization Samahan Para sa Angkop na Pabahay ng San Pablo Apostol (SAPSPA) and as a project officer for Alternative Planning Initiatives (ALTERPLAN), a non-profit, non-government organization focusing on the promotion and advocacy of integrated socio-physical planning.
